Feeling stuck, unmotivated, and uninspired is an experience many encounter during midlife. It can seem like every day is a repeat of the last, leaving you craving excitement and a spark of joy. This midlife rut, characterized by questioning choices, careers, and relationships, is common but can be shaken off with intentional actions. Let's explore how to add sparkle back into your life, shake things up, and reignite your passions with some actionable tips you can implement right away.
What Does a Midlife Rut Look Like?
A midlife rut feels like being stuck, unmotivated, and uninspired. You might find yourself questioning your choices, career, and relationships. Everything feels a bit... meh. But guess what? It's totally normal and happens to the best of us. The good news is, there are ways to shake things up and reignite that spark!
For almost a year now, my week looks like this:
Monday: Work at the hospital, come home, and make a weekly menu & grocery list
Tuesday: Catch up on business emails and plan for the week, make a guest appearance on another podcast
Wednesday: Organize and create material to share in my grief group from 6-7 PM every week
Thursday: Record podcast episodes for most of the day, then do housework
Friday: Catch up on all the things I didn’t get done and want to curl up in a ball from exhaustion
And then repeat. Borrring! Sound like your week?
Adding Sparkle Back Into Your Life
So, how do we add that much-needed sparkle back into our lives? Here are a few ideas:
1. Rediscover Old Passions
Think back to what you loved doing when you were younger. Was it painting, dancing, writing, or maybe gardening? Dedicate some time each week to indulge in these activities. They can bring immense joy and fulfillment.
2. Try Something New
Step out of your comfort zone and try something completely new. It could be a cooking class, learning a new language, or even trying out a new sport. New experiences can be exhilarating and help break the monotony.
3. Self-Care Routine
Often, we neglect self-care. Schedule regular pampering sessions, whether it’s a spa day, a new haircut, or even a simple at-home facial. Taking care of yourself can boost your mood and confidence.
Creating a Local Bucket List
A couple of weeks ago, I listened to one of Mel Robbins' podcasts about a "Never Been There, Never Done That" Bucket List that’s local or fairly close by. It was brilliant! Sometimes, we think we need to travel far and wide to experience excitement, but there's so much to explore right in our own backyard!
1. Explore Local Attractions
Make a list of local attractions you haven't visited yet. It could be museums, parks, historical sites, or even new restaurants. Make it a goal to visit one new place each week or month.
2. Attend Local Events
Check out local events happening in your community. This could be festivals, farmer's markets, art shows, or community theater productions. Engaging in local events can help you feel more connected to your community and add some excitement to your routine.
3. Nature Walks and Hikes
Find local nature trails and parks to explore. Being in nature is incredibly rejuvenating and can provide a much-needed break from your daily routine.
Actionable Tips to Shake Off the Midlife Rut
Here are some actionable tips you can implement right away to start shaking off that midlife rut:
1. Set Small, Achievable Goals
You know me…I love my 1% shifts! Start by setting small, achievable goals. This could be reading a book a month, trying a new recipe each week, or taking a different route for your daily walk. Small changes can make a big difference.
2. Schedule ‘Me Time’
Block out time in your calendar for yourself. Whether it's 30 minutes a day or a few hours a week, make sure you have time dedicated to doing something you love or simply relaxing.
3. Connect with Friends
Reach out to friends you haven't seen in a while. Plan a coffee date, a lunch, or even a virtual catch-up session. Social connections are vital for our wellbeing, especially as we age.
Take the Next Step
Remember, shaking off the midlife rut is about making small, intentional changes that add joy and excitement back into your life. Don’t feel pressured to do everything at once. Start with one or two things that resonate with you and build from there. You’ve got this!
